Hawkwind – Space Rock From London (1972) (@192)
19 Mar 2007
(Info from starfarer.net)
This CD probably exists for one reason, and that is to satisfy the seemingly endless appetite among Hawkwind fans for material from their ‘Space Ritual’ period. It was recorded live at the Paris Theatre (London) on 28th September 1972 for subsequent radio broadcast on the “In Concert” series, on 14th October 1972. This was after Hawkwind’s hit single success with Silver Machine but before the actual Space Ritual tour.
Line-up:
- Dave Brock – guitar, vocals
- Nik Turner – saxophone, flute, vocals
- Lemmy Kilmister – bass guitar, vocals
- Dik Mik Davies – Synthesizer
- Del Dettmar – Synthesizer
- Simon King – drums
Track List:
01 – Born To Go
02 – Seven By Seven
03 – Brainstorm
04 – Master Of The Universe
05 – Paranoia
06 – Silver Machine

(…) endless appetite for material (…)True – I’m (was) one of these guys. As we said in the good old times: What was better than a brand new Hawkwind record ?? … HAWKWIND LIVE in town !!!!

For me this radio concert was ear opening in 72. I tuned in a few minutes late on my old transistor radio and hurriedly clamped the external microphone of my mono cassette machine to the speaker [hi-tech or what?!] the result of this was an an incredible wash of well over the red sound that to my mind was never replicated by any Hawkwind release. Unfortunately the tape died well before this release – the bbc did repeat the concert and I did re-record -sadly however my audio equipment and recording technique was too respectable by then and the results too tame. Incidentally there is another copy of this disc doing the rounds of the blogosphere but it not only omits all the covers but also silver machine and the final welcome. Accept no substitute.
